Tears gathered in my eyes as
I saw the joy in the faces of the
young disabled children holding the
leashes of their new companions
who sat obediently next to their
wheelchairs eagerly waiting to be
in service to them.
This was the
annual graduation of Canine Angels
Service Teams (CAST), an
Oregon nonprofit organization
of people who have a special
place in their hearts for dogs and
disabled persons.
CAST trains dogs to become
service (assistance) dogs
primarily for disabled children.
The dogs are trained to do such
things as retrieve dropped items
or things out of reach, turn lights
on and off, push access buttons,
open and close doors, pull
wheelchairs, assist in physical
therapy exercises, alert an adult
when needed, and just be warm,
loving companions for children
faced with serious life issues.
The staff of CAST consists of
people who have many years’
