Avalon Center 2020 Summer Newsletter THE VOICE June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month Elder abuse is any intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an adult over the age of 60. It often occurs at the hands of a caregiver or a person the elder trusts. There are five types of elder abuse: physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, and finan- cial. Physical abuse includes hitting, kicking, shaking, biting, burn- ing, or any type of force causing injury. Sexual abuse is any sexual contact without consent. Emotional abuse includes name-calling, scaring, belittling, or any behavior that harms mental well-being. Neglect is failure to provide basic needs and leaving the elder alone. Financial exploitation is the illegal use of an elder’s money or prop- erty. 1 in 10 adults will experience some form of abuse. It is important to know that abuse tends to go unreported because the survivor is afraid or unable to report. Knowing the signs can aid in the preven- tion of elder
