1 November 2016 Revolutionary STI diagnostic technology to be evaluated in Brisbane Cutting-edge rapid testing technology for two very common sexually transmitted infections (STI), chlamydia and gonorrhoea, will be evaluated early next year in a Brisbane research pilot. Known as the GeneXpert™, the technology does not require specialists to operate it and can provide chlamydia and gonorrhoea pathology results in 90 minutes that are as accurate as a laboratory test; this allows for rapid STI treatment intervention on the same day to prevent onward STI transmission. It is currently transforming the delivery of sexual health services amongst men who have sex with men, and other target populations at risk, in London. It has also been shown to improve regional/remote sexual health services in regional and remote Australian communities where there is often a lack of local clinicians or timely access to a local laboratory; and is approved for use in Australia by TGA.
