ISAGS received a visit on the 12th
from the Paraguay’s Minister of Public
Health and Welfare, Dr Antonio Barrios.
The meeting was aimed at getting the
Institute and the Ministry closer. Barrios
is in charge of the Ministry since August
2013, when Horacio Cartes became the
country’s president. In an interview to
ISAGS Report, the minister highlighted the
reforms of the primary healthcare network
and the investment in human resources to
make up the shortfall of professionals in
the country: “We lack approximately five
thousand doctors”, he said.
Barrios explained the professionals are
unequally distributed and doctors are
concentrated in the central area and in the
country’s capital. In this context, he spoke
of the system the government is putting
together to increase salaries and promote
the moving to the countryside, especially
to the Chaco region, which, according
