Identifying Centrality Metrics for Different Types of Social Networks Joanne ter Maat University of Twente P.O. Box 217, 7500AE Enschede The Netherlands g.j.termaat-1@student.utwente.nl ABSTRACT Centrality within social networks identifies nodes that play a special role within the network, nodes that are important in some way. This centrality can be measured with metrics like degree, closeness or betweenness. These metrics, however, are not suitable for all kinds of social networks. Networks can vary in the way node-to-node transmission takes place, or in the way a course through the network is taken. This results in different types of information flow processes. When metrics are used for an inappropriate flow process, the result of the metric can be misleading. In this paper different kinds of metrics are discussed and with help of a simulation of the flow of information in a network we show that information centrality is suitable for networks where transfer takes places with informat
