At the beginning of the 1940's a German V2 rocket accidentally made its way into
space on a test flight. Following this unexpected mission the theory of space flight
seemed tantalisingly possible, and other people began to make plans to go to space.
Some plans may have already existed but they were not of any real importance, so it
was then that the first aspects of space travel began to be properly explored.
However, during this time there was a certain amount of tension between America and
Russia and many people believed that the winner of any 'Space Race' would have a
significant advantage if it came to a war. This may have been one of the reasons why
America and Russia were so desperate to win. Research and testing began as both
superpowers strived to make their rockets perform and prepared for the day when a
rocket could be flown into space.
