Hers Title IX must be enforced for the sake of all girls W hen Title. IX law was implemented in 1972 prohibiting sex discrimination in the administration of educational programs and activities at institutions receiving federal funds, girls were supposed to be guaranteed to have the same opportunities to participate in sports as the boys. I became one of the first women to earn a basketball scholarship to a university in Illinois and to play in the first women s professional basketball league in America. I didn t mind that we had to eat sack suppers and drive ourselves in campus station wagons across the country to compete while the boys ate steak dinners and flew to their games. Nor was I shocked when my professional team folded before I was even paid a dime. I was disappointed but figured that was the price one paid being a pioneer.
