The Giver: Book Versus Play

Have you ever noticed that when a book gets adapted into a play, there
are changes made? The book “The Giver” was written by Louis Lowry and was
adapted to a play by Eric Coble.
In it, there were many similarities with the book.
However, there were also many differences.
In this essay, I will talk about three
events in the story and how they differed in the book and in the play.
The first of the differences is how the Ceremony of Twelve is portrayed.
In
the book, there were other ceremonies celebrated before the Ceremony of
Twelve.
All of the children were standing onstage while they were waiting to be
called and the announcer was standing next to them.
There was also an
audience who through Jonas’ eyes changed.
In the play, the Ceremony of
Twelve was the only ceremony celebrated.
There were only three children
standing up onstage: Jonas, Asher, and Fiona; and the announcer was heard
from speakers.
