Feminism in Kate Chopin’s Stories
What is your opinion on feminism? Kate Chopin was an American writer in the 19th
century.
In that time women did not have the same rights as men.
Female writers could
not publish books, and their works had to be published in magazines.
Kate Chopin was
famous for writing short stories.
In them, feminism was a dominant theme.
In this
essay, I will demonstrate how feminism can be found in three of her short stories: “Ripe
Figs”, “The Story of an Hour”, and “The Storm”.
First, I will discuss the examples of feminism in the story “Ripe Figs”.
For starters, the
main characters are two women.
It shows Maman-Nainaine’s love for her goddaughter
Babette and her wisdom.
Babette is anxious to visit her cousins and go wild, but her
godmother tells her to wait until the figs ripen.
By the time they ripened, Babette was
more mature and her godmother let her visit her cousins and be an independent
woman.
