Arts Workshop – Comenius Meeting in Porto – 22 January 2014
Using collage.
Take a look at the projected image of the painting by Paula Rego "The Dance" (1988). There is
shown an outdoor dance with two pairs, a woman dancing alone, and two women and a child
making a circle.
The scene takes place in the moonlight, by the sea. In the painting there is a sharp contrast
between the tranquility of nature - sea, full moon, sky ..., marked by cold, neutral colours, and the
dynamism and movement of the figures reinforced by the movements and rhythms of the skirts of
the female figures, some of them punctuated by warm colours.
The proposal is to interpret this painting, making a collage covering the whole composition or just
one or two figures you choose. This interpretation may be accurate and true to the image or
expressive and creative. Do not forget to keep the dynamism and movement of the
composition.
