Port wine was founded in the XVII century, when
English traders, in order to increase the commerce
between England and Portugal, mixed wine with
cognac to avoid that the wine be spoiled during the
trip. They found that the stronger and sweeter was
the wine, the better was the flavour.
The maturation and the mixing methods being
used nowadays have become more sophisticated in
warehouses where the wine is finished and bottled.
This warehouses are in the south bank of the
Douro’s river, in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Until today, most of the port wine trade is still in
the hands of English companies.

• Ferreira;
• Sandeman;
