Acropolis: Fortified hill, often rocky which
someone finds in many Greek towns, such as
Athens, Mycenae, Argos and Tiryns.
At first
Acropolis was useful as a shelter for the people in
case of danger.
Later on monuments, temples or the
king’s house were built there.
The most famous, is
that of Athens.
During the Mycenaean time it was a
royal fortification, whereas in the 5th
century B.
C
(the well known Golden Age of Pericles) it was
converted into a sacred place in the honour of the
goddess Athens.
It was destroyed in 480 B.
C by the
Persians, but it was rebuilt and beautified by
Pericles.
