THESE happy couples created history
last Saturday when they took part in the
nation’s first legally-recognised same-sex
marriage ceremonies in the Australian
CapitalTerritory.
At the time of going to print, the
country had yet to see if the High Court
would strike down ACT’s same-sex
marriage legislation - or declare it legal but this did not stop them, and scores of
othercouples,fromgettinghitchedinthe
daysitwerelegaltodoso.
Thecourtwasexpectedtohavedecided
on the Federal Government’s challenge
thattheACT’slegislationwasinconsistent
with the Federal Marriage Act just days
before December 7 - the date same-sex
couples could start getting married - but
theyreservedituntilDecember12.
