Kevin Rudd has become the second former
Australian prime minister to support
marriage equality, announcing this week
that he now believes a “secular Australian
state should be able to recognise same-sex
marriage”.
Rudd posted a lengthy statement on
his website on Monday night detailing his
change of heart and throwing into question
the numbers for a potential new vote on the
issue in the House of Representatives on
June 6.
“I have come to the conclusion that
churchandstatecanhavedifferentpositions
and practices on the question of same-sex
marriage,” Rudd wrote in the post.
“I also believe that this change should
legally exempt religious institutions
from any requirement to change their
historic position and practice that
marriage is exclusively between a man
and a woman.
