Normal rule: add "-er" old > older
Variation: if the adjective ends in -e, just add -r late > later
Variation: if the adjective ends in consonant, vowel,
consonant, double the last consonant

Long adjectives
• 2-syllable adjectives not ending in -y modern, pleasant
